Every behavior that keeps happening is working for somebody. ABC recording is not there to prove a child is difficult. It is there to find out what the behavior is getting them, or getting them out of, so you can teach a better way to do that same job. Eight sheets: the standard three columns, a version with a setting events column for what was already true that day, a version with a column for what you think the behavior was for, a fifteen-second check sheet, a frequency count with a column for how long you were actually watching, a duration record, and a scatterplot. The thing that makes ABC data useless is not the form, it is that nobody fills it in at the time. That is why the check sheet is in here as a first-class page and not an afterthought. Two pages are written for the adult: why "was defiant" is a verdict and not an observation, why the consequence column is the most useful one and the most skipped, and how to turn fifteen rows into one sentence you can act on.
